Size: The ideal height for males is 15 inches (38 cm) at the withers. The ideal height for females is 14 inches (35.5 cm) at the withers. Both male and female weigh around 11-13kg (24.3-28.6lbs).


Physical Description: The American Cocker Spaniel is a medium sized dog with a sturdy compact body. They are the smallest breed in the sporting group. They have a rounded head with a pronounced stop and a square jaw. Ears are long and feathered and their medium-length coat is silky, flat or wavy, and comes in a variety of colors such as black and tan, merle, any solid color, solid color with tan points, and parti-color. Solid black is not accepted by the AKC. Tails are usually docked. The American Cocker Spaniel is not the same as the English Cocker Spaniel and has a shorter muzzle and more prominent eyes.


Temperament: American Cocker Spaniels are known for their pleasant, easygoing and cheerful personalities. Their loyal and loving nature makes them great family dogs. American Cocker Spaniels are generally even-tempered and get along well with other dogs, assuming they have been properly socialized as a puppy. A healthy, well-bred American Cocker Spaniel is active, playful, intelligent and very cooperative with training. American Cocker Spaniels can be sensitive and shy if not properly socialized at an early age.


Grooming: This breed needs routine trimming and frequent brushing to maintain a healthy coat. The American Cocker Spaniel is an average shedder.


Exercise: Due to their active nature, regular exercise is necessary for the American Cocker Spaniel. This breed can also be prone to weight gain so regular exercise is especially important to maintain a healthy weight.
